A referee expert has confirmed that a Real Madrid player was rightfully sent off during the match against Real Betis, settling the debate over the controversial decision.
The incident occurred in the second half of the La Liga clash at the Benito Villamarín Stadium. The Real Madrid player received a straight red card following a challenge that sparked immediate debate among fans and pundits.
The referee expert, speaking after the game, analysed the footage and stated that the decision was correct. According to the expert, the tackle met all the criteria for a serious foul play dismissal, as the player went in with excessive force and endangered the opponent’s safety.
“The red card was fully deserved,” the expert said. “The player lunged in with his studs showing and made contact above the ankle. In modern football, that is a clear sending-off offence, and the referee applied the law correctly.”
The sending-off left Real Madrid with ten men for the final 30 minutes of the match. Despite being a man down, the team managed to hold on for a draw, but the result dealt a blow to their title hopes in the 2026 season.
Betis players surrounded the referee immediately after the challenge, calling for a harsh punishment. Replays showed the Real Madrid player catching his opponent on the shin, leaving a visible mark.
The expert added that there was no room for argument. “Some might say it was harsh because the player didn’t mean to cause harm, but intent is not a factor here. The action itself was reckless and dangerous. The referee had no choice but to show red.”
Real Madrid are expected to review the incident internally, but the club has not yet issued an official statement regarding a potential appeal. The player now faces a suspension that could keep him out of key fixtures in the coming weeks.
