South Africa’s Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has rebuked national team coach Hugo Broos after his recent comments criticising Morocco.
McKenzie wrote on social media that Broos should focus on his job with Bafana Bafana and avoid making remarks that can create unnecessary tension, stressing that such statements do not serve South African football.
The minister’s message came in response to Broos’ criticism of Morocco, which sparked debate in South African football circles and drew attention beyond the country.
McKenzie’s intervention made clear that the government does not support turning sporting rivalry into public disputes, calling for respect in comments directed at other nations.
The dispute arrives while South Africa continue their work with the national team programme, with Broos under pressure to keep results and performances on track and to maintain a calm atmosphere around the squad.
No further official action was announced, but the minister’s public response amounted to a direct warning to the coach over his choice of words in relation to Morocco.
