Ruben Amorim has made a decisive choice about his future, ending weeks of speculation over the next step in his coaching career. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager has confirmed he will remain at Sporting CP, turning down approaches from several major European clubs.
According to sources close to the coach, Amorim informed Sporting’s board of his decision on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. He committed to staying at the Lisbon club at least until the end of the 2025–2026 season. The announcement puts an end to rumours linking him with a move to the Premier League or other top European leagues.
Amorim’s current contract with Sporting runs until June 2026. The club had been bracing for potential offers after his impressive work in recent years. Under his guidance, Sporting won the Primeira Liga title in 2020–2021 and again in 2023–2024, breaking the dominance of Benfica and Porto.
Speaking after the decision, Amorim said: “I feel at home here. The project is not finished. We have more to achieve together. Leaving now would not be the right move for me or for the club.” His statement was welcomed by Sporting fans, who have grown to admire his tactical approach and leadership.
The coach also addressed the interest from abroad. “It is flattering to be wanted by big clubs. But I made a promise to the players and to the fans. I intend to keep it. My focus is on the next match, not on the next job.”
Sporting currently sit second in the Primeira Liga table, three points behind leaders Benfica with nine games remaining in the 2024–2025 season. Amorim’s side also reached the quarter-finals of the Taça de Portugal and are still alive in the Europa League, where they face a two-legged tie against Roma in April 2025.
The decision brings clarity to Sporting’s planning for the summer transfer window. The club can now move forward with its recruitment strategy knowing the manager will be in charge for at least another season. Several key players, including Pedro Gonçalves and Ousmane Diomande, have also been linked with moves away, but Amorim’s commitment may help convince them to stay.
Amorim took over at Sporting in March 2020, replacing Silas. He was just 35 at the time and had only one full season of senior management experience at Braga. Since then, he has built a reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches, known for his high-pressing system and ability to develop young talent.
His decision to stay at Sporting is seen as a major boost for the club’s long-term ambitions. Sporting president Frederico Varandas said: “Ruben is not just our coach. He is the heart of this project. His decision shows his belief in what we are building.”
With his future now settled, Amorim can focus entirely on the run-in. Sporting face a crucial league match against Porto on March 16, 2025, followed by the first leg of their Europa League tie against Roma on April 3, 2025. The coming weeks will define whether this season ends with silverware or disappointment.
