Algeria legend Lakhdar Belloumi has launched a fierce attack on the Africa Cup of Nations, describing it as “a disgrace and a scandal”, while insisting referees are “carrying out literal instructions” during matches.
Speaking in comments that quickly spread among Algerian fans, Belloumi said he no longer trusts the way the tournament is being run, pointing to what he sees as repeated refereeing decisions that affect results.
Belloumi stressed that the problem, in his view, is not limited to one match or one team, but is linked to a wider pattern in African competitions. He argued that referees appear to be following directions, rather than relying on their own judgment in key moments.
The former Algeria star also criticised the overall standard of organisation, saying the continent’s biggest tournament should not be surrounded by this level of controversy.
His remarks come as the Africa Cup continues amid heavy debate over officiating, with several teams and supporters across the tournament voicing frustration at certain calls.
Belloumi’s statements add another strong voice to those questioning the competition’s credibility at a sensitive stage, as he urged officials to take responsibility and protect the game’s image in Africa.
