Senegal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement on Saturday, hours before the Africa Cup of Nations final against Algeria, following an incident involving defender Malick Thiaw.
The ministry said it had “taken note” of the attack on Thiaw, confirming that the player was targeted while with the Senegal national team delegation in Egypt, where the tournament is being held.
In its statement, the ministry strongly condemned the assault and stressed that such acts have no place in sport. It also called for those responsible to be identified and held accountable, while underlining the need to guarantee the safety of Senegal’s delegation.
The ministry added that it is coordinating with the relevant Egyptian authorities and Senegal’s official representatives on the ground to follow the case and ensure the necessary measures are taken.
Senegal are set to face Algeria in the AFCON final later on Saturday, with the government urging calm and asking supporters to back the team in a positive manner.
