A clash broke out on live television between Thierry Henry and Jamie Carragher over the Africa Cup of Nations, as the French legend moved quickly to shut down Carragher’s comments and firmly defended African referees.

The exchange came after what was described as a chaotic final between Senegal and Morocco, when Carragher questioned the level of officiating and suggested the tournament’s refereeing should be held to a different standard.

Henry immediately rejected that view, insisting the criticism was unfair and that referees in Africa deserve the same respect given to officials anywhere else. He stressed that mistakes can happen in any competition and that AFCON should not be singled out.

The former France striker also pointed out that pressure and controversy are part of football at the highest level, and that judging an entire tournament based on a few incidents is not right.

Henry’s response left no room for debate, as he defended the work of African officials and pushed back strongly against what he saw as a dismissive take on the continent’s football.
