Ethan Nwaneri has explained why he chose to leave Arsenal on loan, revealing that a first-team teammate played a key role in helping him make the decision.

The highly rated teenager, one of the brightest prospects to come through the club’s academy in recent years, said he wanted a move that would push his development and give him the type of weekly senior football that is difficult to guarantee at a side competing at the top end of the Premier League.

Nwaneri admitted the choice was not straightforward. He remains committed to Arsenal and has no doubts about where he wants his long-term future to be. But he felt the next step in his career needed to be about minutes, responsibility and learning the demands of playing for results every weekend.

Speaking about the process, Nwaneri pointed to advice he received from within Mikel Arteta’s squad. He said a teammate who has already been through the loan system offered honest guidance on what to expect away from the club, from adapting to a different dressing room to handling the pressure of being relied upon in senior matches.

That conversation, Nwaneri explained, helped him see the loan as an opportunity rather than a risk. He described it as reassurance from someone who understands the environment at Arsenal but also knows how valuable it can be for young players to step out of their comfort zone.

Arsenal have used loans regularly to accelerate the progress of academy talents, and Nwaneri’s move fits that approach. The club have been protective of his pathway, managing his exposure to first-team football while ensuring he continues to develop physically and tactically.

Nwaneri has already trained around established internationals and made headlines at a young age, but he knows that breaking into Arsenal’s starting XI is a difficult task given the competition in the attacking and midfield areas.

The midfielder also stressed that the loan does not change his ambitions at the Emirates. He views it as a short-term step designed to prepare him for a bigger role in the future, and he intends to return sharper, stronger and ready to challenge.

For now, the focus is on settling quickly at his temporary club and making an impact. Nwaneri believes the experience—spurred on by that teammate’s influence—will help him take the next step toward becoming a regular at Arsenal.
