Guardiola dismisses Haaland as Premier League's best

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has moved to cool the hype surrounding his star striker Erling Haaland, firmly rejecting the notion that the Norwegian is currently the Premier League’s standout player.

The comments came in response to a journalist’s question ahead of City’s crucial clash with Tottenham on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. When asked if Haaland, who leads the Golden Boot race, is the best player in the league, Guardiola offered a blunt and surprising rebuttal.

“The best player in the Premier League?” Guardiola responded. “No, he’s the top scorer, but in terms of playing, he’s not the best.”

Guardiola then elaborated, shifting the focus to the collective effort required for individual accolades in football. “He has an incredible sense for goal. But to be the top scorer, you need everyone. You need Kevin [De Bruyne], Phil [Foden], and everyone else creating the chances for him.”

The Catalan coach emphasized that Haaland’s remarkable goal tally—27 in the league this season—is a product of the team’s overall performance. “Without them, it’s impossible. So he’s the best scorer, but in terms of the best player, I would say there are many fantastic players in the Premier League.”

Guardiola’s remarks serve as a deliberate attempt to manage expectations and maintain balance within his squad as they pursue an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title. With two matches remaining, City sit two points clear at the summit.

He concluded with a call for perspective, repeating the word “calm” three times for emphasis. “Calm… calm… calm. The best scorer, yes. But in terms of the best player, there are many.”
