Chile star’s Panenka attempt turns into worst penalty ever

Morocco's forward takes a penalty shot during the Africa Cup of Nations match against Senegal, while the goalkeeper prepares to save.

A bizarre moment in Chilean football quickly went viral after a national team star tried to copy a famous Panenka-style penalty, only for the attempt to turn into what many described as the worst spot-kick ever taken.

In the incident, the player stepped up and attempted a soft, chipped finish down the middle in the style associated with Alexis Sanchez’s well-known penalty technique, widely shared in Latin America under the phrase “on the footsteps of Diaz”.

But the execution went completely wrong. Instead of floating the ball into the net, the penalty lacked power and direction, allowing the goalkeeper to deal with it with ease, leaving the taker embarrassed as the clip spread rapidly online.

The video of the miss drew a wave of reactions across social media, with fans and commentators mocking the failed Panenka and calling it the worst penalty they had ever seen.
