In a surprising move, Gambia has not issued any official message congratulating Senegal after their triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Senegal sealed the title after beating Egypt 4-2 on penalties in the final, following a goalless draw in normal time and extra time, to win the first AFCON trophy in the country’s history.
While many African nations and football federations sent public congratulations to the Senegalese team, the absence of any official statement from Gambia drew attention, especially given the tension that has marked relations between the two neighbors in recent years.
The issue is linked to the long-running dispute over the town of Kanilai, located near the border, which has remained a point of political sensitivity between the two countries.
That backdrop has made the lack of an official congratulatory message from Gambia notable, even as the Senegalese celebrations continued after the historic victory.
