Noni Madueke has been credited with an Olimpico goal that ended his 12-month Premier League scoring drought, after Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow flapped the ball into his own net.
The Arsenal winger thought he had finally got his name back on the scoresheet when his corner caused chaos at the near post. The ball bounced up, Darlow tried to deal with it under pressure, and the keeper could only help it over the line.
Initially there was uncertainty over whether the goal would stand as an own goal, but officials later confirmed it would be awarded to Madueke as a direct corner – an Olimpico.
The decision means Madueke’s long wait for a league goal is officially over, with the winger now credited for the strike rather than the effort being put down to a Darlow mistake.
It was a rare moment of end product for Madueke in the Premier League, and one that came in unusual fashion, but it will still count the same as he looks to build momentum after a frustrating year in front of goal.
