Arsenal are weighing up a move for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez as they continue to look for a new No.9, with the club’s plans potentially shifting away from long-time target Viktor Gyokeres.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with Gyokeres after his prolific spell at Sporting, but it has been revealed that Arsenal are now also considering an approach for Alvarez, who only joined Atletico Madrid last summer.
Arsenal’s search for a striker is expected to be a key part of their transfer work, and Alvarez has emerged as a fresh option on their list as Mikel Arteta looks to add more cutting edge to his attack.
The Argentina international has quickly become an important figure for Diego Simeone’s side, meaning any deal would be complicated. Atletico are not believed to be looking to sell and Alvarez’s status in Madrid would make him a difficult player to prise away.
Even so, Arsenal are understood to be monitoring the situation closely, with Alvarez now being mentioned as a possible alternative if a move for Gyokeres does not progress.
With the summer window approaching, Arsenal’s next steps in the market will determine whether their focus stays on Gyokeres or turns more seriously towards Alvarez as their striker shortlist evolves.
