Mikel Arteta has provided a crucial update on the fitness of three key Arsenal players ahead of Thursday’s Europa League last-16 first leg against Sporting CP in Lisbon.
The Gunners’ manager confirmed that midfielder Thomas Partey, who missed the weekend’s dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Bournemouth, is a major doubt for the trip to Portugal. “Thomas Partey had some muscle discomfort and will be out for this game. We don’t know for how long,” Arteta stated, highlighting a significant potential absence in the engine room.
There was more positive news regarding striker Eddie Nketiah. The English forward, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury since the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on February 15, is back in training and could be in contention. “He’s progressing really well. He’s been training already and hopefully we’ll have him available,” Arteta revealed, offering a welcome boost to Arsenal’s attacking options.
The situation surrounding defender Gabriel Jesus remains more complex. The Brazilian is continuing his recovery from knee surgery performed after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. While he is making steady progress, Thursday’s match comes too soon for his return. “With Gabi, it’s a bit different. He’s progressing really well but the time frame is still uncertain. He needs to go through some steps. The first steps are already done,” Arteta explained, managing expectations for a player whose absence has been keenly felt.
Arsenal face Sporting at the Estádio José Alvalade on Thursday, March 9, with the decisive second leg scheduled for the Emirates Stadium on March 16.
