Atletico Madrid has firmly rejected an approach from Barcelona regarding the potential signing of Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, dealing a significant blow to their La Liga rivals’ transfer plans.
The proposal, which was made in recent days, saw Barcelona attempt to initiate talks for the 24-year-old Manchester City striker. However, Atletico’s leadership, led by CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, immediately turned down the offer, refusing to even entertain the idea of negotiating with a direct competitor for such a key target.
Alvarez has been a long-standing objective for Atletico’s sporting management as they look to build a forward line for the future. The club views him as a fundamental piece of their project and has no intention of facilitating a move that would strengthen Barcelona, especially after the Catalans secured the signing of top target Nico Williams earlier this summer.
Barcelona’s attempt came amid their own search for a new striker following the departure of Robert Lewandowski. With Alvarez’s situation at Manchester City—where he is highly valued but often plays second fiddle to Erling Haaland—being monitored by several top clubs, the Blaugrana saw an opportunity. Yet, their direct route through Madrid has been decisively blocked.
This rejection underscores the intense rivalry between the two clubs and Atletico’s clear strategy in the transfer market. By shutting down Barcelona’s proposal outright, the Colchoneros have sent a strong message about their ambitions and their resolve to not aid a competitor’s squad building.
For Julian Alvarez, the focus remains on his future at Manchester City for the 2024/2025 season, though speculation about a move will persist. Atletico Madrid’s firm stance, however, has ensured that if a transfer does materialize in 2025 or 2026, it will not be to the Camp Nou.
