Barcelona president Joan Laporta has delivered a sharp assessment of Ousmane Dembélé after the winger’s long-running contract dispute ended with his exit from the club. Laporta suggested the France international’s attitude behind the scenes became a problem and made it clear the board felt vindicated by how events played out.
Dembélé’s future dominated headlines for months after he entered the final year of his deal. Barcelona repeatedly pushed for a renewal, while the player’s camp held firm on salary and terms. At one stage, the club even hinted he could be left out if he did not commit, before he eventually remained for the season and later moved on in a deal that closed the door on any fresh agreement.
Speaking about the saga, Laporta said the club made every effort to keep the player but felt his behavior complicated matters. He described Dembélé as “unpleasant” and pointed to the tension created during negotiations, adding that Barcelona did not want to be held hostage by any one individual.
The president also stressed that the club’s position was consistent throughout. Barcelona wanted clarity, and when it did not arrive, they prepared for the possibility of losing the player. Laporta insisted the club’s rebuilding plans could not be shaped around uncertainty and that maintaining discipline in negotiations is now a priority.
Dembélé arrived at Camp Nou in 2017 as one of Europe’s most expensive signings, brought in to fill the gap left by Neymar. His time in Catalonia included flashes of top-class talent, but injuries and stop-start form prevented him from becoming the reliable star many expected. Even so, he remained an important option when fit, especially in the final stretch of his Barcelona career.
Now, with Dembélé out of the picture, Barcelona are turning their attention to strengthening the squad with more stable profiles. The club continues to work within financial limits, and Laporta’s comments underline an approach that places the team’s long-term structure above any individual name, no matter how gifted.
