Diogo Dalot avoided a red card during Manchester United’s derby clash with Manchester City after a high challenge on Jeremy Doku left supporters in disbelief.
The incident came in the first half when Dalot went in with his boot raised and caught Doku high as the City winger tried to move away from him. City players immediately appealed, while the reaction online was one of shock that the United defender was not dismissed.
Referee Anthony Taylor stopped play and produced a yellow card for Dalot, judging the challenge to be reckless rather than serious foul play. VAR checked the incident, but there was no upgrade to a red and the on-field decision stood.
The moment quickly became a major talking point of the match, with many fans convinced Dalot was fortunate to stay on the pitch given the height of the contact and the speed of the challenge.
Despite the controversy, United were able to continue with 11 men as City’s protests came to nothing, with Dalot escaping further punishment beyond the booking.
