A former Liverpool striker has mapped out a shock scenario in which Jurgen Klopp returns to Anfield, insisting the German would only come back for one club and predicting a huge verbal statement that would effectively spell the end for Arne Slot.
Klopp stepped down as Liverpool manager at the end of the 2023-24 season after almost nine years in charge, having delivered the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups and the Club World Cup during his time on Merseyside.
Liverpool have since appointed Slot, with the Dutchman taking over in the dugout after leaving Feyenoord. But, speaking about Klopp’s future, the ex-Reds forward believes there is one clear route back to management that could see him return to Anfield.
He argued that if Klopp ever came back to coaching, it would be for Liverpool and not another club, and suggested the only way it happens is if the former boss makes it clear he wants the job again in unmistakable terms.
The striker claimed that a line along the lines of “I’m coming back” would be the sort of statement that changes everything at Liverpool, because of what Klopp means to the club and supporters, and because of the pressure it would place on Slot in the role.
Klopp has previously spoken about being drained by the demands of the job and has made clear his decision to leave was driven by a need to step away, but the former Liverpool player still believes the door is not fully closed if circumstances change.
For now, Slot remains the man in charge as Liverpool move into a new era, yet the ex-Reds striker’s comments underline how quickly the conversation would shift if Klopp ever publicly declared his intention to return — and that, in his view, Liverpool would be the only destination.
