Hugo Ekitike has played down comparisons to Fernando Torres after receiving praise from Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard recently compared the striker to former Reds forward Torres, a comment that quickly caught attention. But Ekitike was keen to keep things in perspective when asked about it.
“I watched clips on YouTube,” Ekitike said in a humble response, making it clear he is aware of Torres’ level and reputation. The forward stressed that he still has plenty to prove and that he is focused on his own development rather than being put alongside a player of Torres’ standing.
The Frenchman’s reaction underlined his respect for the former Spain international, while also showing he is not getting carried away by high-profile praise. Ekitike is continuing to concentrate on his performances, with the Gerrard comments seen as a compliment but not something he wants to define him at this stage.
Gerrard, a long-time admirer of Torres from their time at Liverpool, had pointed to similarities in Ekitike’s style. Ekitike, however, insisted he is taking the comparison as motivation and is keeping his feet on the ground.
The striker’s measured reply has been well received, with Ekitike making it clear he is determined to carve his own path rather than live up to a label built around a Liverpool icon.
