Jaap Stam has urged Manchester United to move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong in January, insisting the Dutchman would be an ideal fit at Old Trafford.
Speaking about United’s transfer priorities, the former Red Devils defender said De Jong has long been admired by the club and backed them to revive their pursuit when the window reopens.
“He has been on the club’s shortlist for quite a while,” Stam said, describing De Jong as a player who could bring control and quality to United’s midfield.
Stam also labelled the Netherlands international a “dream” signing, pointing to his ability on the ball and the way he can carry possession through pressure. He believes those traits are exactly what United need as they look to improve their performances during the second half of the season.
United tried to sign De Jong in the past and, according to Stam, the interest has not gone away. He feels a renewed approach in January would make sense if the club want to add a top-class midfielder.
De Jong remains a Barcelona player, but Stam’s comments underline that United’s long-standing admiration has not faded as the January transfer window approaches.
