Liverpool have agreed a £60 million deal with Rennes for highly-rated defender Jeremy Jacquet, in a move that has left Chelsea beaten to the signature.
The agreement represents a major twist in the race for Jacquet, with Chelsea previously pushing to land the French youngster. However, Liverpool have now moved ahead and reached an understanding with Rennes, putting them in pole position to complete the transfer.
The deal is understood to be worth £60m, with Liverpool’s approach proving decisive as they closed in on a player viewed as one of the most promising defensive talents in Ligue 1.
It has been revealed that Liverpool managed to stun Chelsea by getting the agreement over the line with Rennes, turning the situation on its head after the Blues’ interest had put them firmly in the conversation for the defender.
With the clubs now aligned on the fee, Liverpool are set to finalise the move as they look to strengthen their squad, while Chelsea are left to reassess after missing out in this latest transfer battle.
