Riyad Mahrez and Aissa Mandi have moved ahead of Rabah Madjer in the ranking of Algeria’s most successful players in Africa, after adding another continental trophy to their records.
Mahrez, the captain of Algeria’s national team, helped Al Ahli win the AFC Champions League Elite title with a 2-0 victory over Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale in the final on Saturday.
Mahrez played a key role in the winning campaign, finishing the tournament with 9 assists, on top of scoring 5 goals.
In the same final, Algeria defender Aissa Mandi also celebrated the title with Al Ahli, as he started the match and completed the full 90 minutes.
With that success, Mahrez and Mandi took their tally to two continental titles each, overtaking former Algeria star Rabah Madjer, who previously held the record with one African crown.
Mahrez’s first continental title came in Africa, when he won the African Cup of Nations with Algeria.
Mandi also has a continental record of his own, having lifted the Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria, before adding the Asian Champions League to his honours with Al Ahli.
The latest title confirmed a new order at the top of Algeria’s Africa ranks, with Mahrez and Mandi now leading the list thanks to their shared achievement on the continental stage.
