Marseille president Pablo Longoria has revealed he turned to his own mother for advice before deciding to sign Mason Greenwood, admitting the club knew the move would be controversial.
Greenwood joined OM from Manchester United in the summer after spending last season on loan at Getafe. His arrival split opinion and brought extra scrutiny to the Ligue 1 side, but Longoria said Marseille did not make the call lightly.
Speaking about the transfer, Longoria explained that he wanted an outside, personal view away from the noise of football. He said he asked his mother what she thought about the deal before going ahead.
Longoria also suggested Marseille could eventually profit from the former United forward, hinting that the club may look to cash in if the right opportunity arrives in the future.
Greenwood has made a strong start to life in France and has quickly become a key part of Marseille’s attack, with his performances helping to shift some of the focus back onto the pitch.
For now, Marseille appear committed to Greenwood as they push on with their season, while Longoria’s comments show just how much discussion went into a signing that continues to attract attention.
