Shaka Hislop has questioned the impact Arsenal target Victor Gyokeres has had, arguing the striker’s work has not quite matched the growing hype around him.
Speaking on ESPN FC, Hislop said: “I don’t think he’s been much of a success.” The former goalkeeper’s comments came during a wide-ranging debate on the show that touched on a dramatic week of managerial change.
Gyokeres has been repeatedly linked with a move to Arsenal as the club continues to be connected with a new centre-forward, but Hislop did not believe the forward has done enough to be viewed as a clear-cut answer for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Hislop’s remarks formed part of a broader conversation on the pressures at the top level, with ESPN FC discussing a week in which Enzo Maresca, Ruben Amorim and Wilfried Nancy were sacked.
The trio’s departures were used as examples of how quickly results can dictate decisions, even when coaches are still early in their work or seen as part of a longer-term plan.
For Gyokeres, the conversation returned to whether the striker would represent an upgrade for Arsenal and if his overall contribution has been as decisive as some suggest.
Hislop’s verdict was clear, and his assessment adds another layer to the debate as Arsenal continue to be linked with attacking reinforcements.
