Stockport County’s League One win over Rotherham United featured one of the most bizarre own goals of the season, as a huge mix-up at the back gifted the home side a remarkable moment.
In a passage of play that quickly went viral, a Rotherham defender attempted to deal with a routine situation but ended up sending the ball back toward his own goal. With the goalkeeper caught out and unable to recover in time, the ball rolled over the line to leave Rotherham stunned and Stockport celebrating an unlikely boost.
The incident, which was captured on video, left players from both teams momentarily frozen as they realised what had happened. Stockport, by contrast, wasted no time in taking advantage as they went on to secure the victory.
The own goal proved to be a key moment in the match, turning the game firmly in Stockport’s favour as they saw out the result against their League One opponents.
While Stockport will happily take the points, the mistake will be a painful one for Rotherham, with the footage already being talked about as a potential “own goal of the year” contender after the incredible confusion that led to it.
