Former Egypt defender Wael Gomaa believes the national team have benefited more from locally based players than from expatriates in recent years, saying the domestic contingent has often been the difference in key moments.
Speaking about the make-up of the current Egypt squad, Gomaa stressed that several players from the Egyptian league have shown greater impact and consistency than some of the professionals playing abroad, pointing to their stronger form and influence with the team.
Gomaa explained that the player’s level with the national team should be the main measure, not his club’s location, adding that selection must be based on who is performing and delivering in matches for Egypt.
He also highlighted the importance of balance in the squad, noting that having professionals abroad is valuable, but it should not come at the expense of players who are proving themselves every week in the local competition.
Gomaa’s comments come amid ongoing debate in Egypt over the role of overseas-based players, with the former international reiterating that local players have, in his view, outshone the expatriates in the national team.
