Strasbourg secured a vital 2-1 victory over OGC Nice at the Stade de la Meinau on Sunday, a win powered by significant contributions from two new Moroccan internationals.
The home side took the lead in the 26th minute through midfielder Habib Diarra. The goal was created by a moment of individual brilliance from winger Ângelo Gabriel, who delivered a perfect cross for Diarra to head home.
Strasbourg doubled their advantage just before halftime. In the 44th minute, a defensive error from Nice allowed striker Emanuel Emegha to pounce, and he made no mistake to put his team in a commanding position.
Nice improved after the break and managed to pull a goal back in the 67th minute through Jérémie Boga. However, Strasbourg’s defense, marshaled by new Moroccan center-back Abakar Sylla, held firm under pressure to see out the win.
The result is a major boost for Strasbourg’s Ligue 1 survival hopes, lifting them out of the relegation playoff spot. The impact of their January signings was clear, with Sylla putting in a dominant defensive performance and fellow Moroccan newcomer Saïdou Sow also featuring.
It was revealed that Sylla’s commanding display came just hours after he received his first official call-up to the Moroccan national team, adding to the significance of his performance for his club.
