The president of the Senegal Football Federation, Augustin Senghor, has made bold statements that are sure to provoke a reaction from Moroccan football officials. Senghor declared that the Senegalese national team is currently the strongest on the African continent.
In his remarks, Senghor directly addressed the recent performances of Morocco, who made history by reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He stated, “What Morocco achieved in the World Cup was exceptional, but that does not mean they are the best team in Africa today.”
The Senegalese football chief elaborated on his stance, pointing to his own nation’s recent achievements as proof of their strength. “We are the reigning African champions,” Senghor said, referencing Senegal’s victory in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. “We also qualified for the last World Cup and performed well. Our team has consistency and quality across all lines.”
These comments come at a time when Morocco’s stock in world football is incredibly high following their unprecedented run. The Atlas Lions became the first African and Arab nation to reach the World Cup’s final four, earning global acclaim.
However, Senghor believes the title of continental top dog belongs in Dakar. He concluded his provocative claims by emphasizing Senegal’s sustained success, suggesting that while Morocco had an extraordinary tournament, Senegal’s body of work makes them the continent’s premier side. This public declaration sets the stage for an intensified sporting rivalry between two of Africa’s football powerhouses.
