Fans Demand Yusuf Al-Nassiri's Removal from Al-Ittihad

Al-Ittihad club is witnessing a state of unprecedented public anger following the team’s disappointing exit from the AFC Champions League. The focus of the fans’ fury has squarely fallen on the club’s president, Yusuf Al-Nassiri.

The crisis erupted after Al-Ittihad, the Saudi Pro League champions, suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat at home to Al-Hilal in the second leg of the AFC Champions League quarter-finals on March 12, 2024. This result sealed a 4-0 aggregate loss, ending their continental campaign.

In the immediate aftermath, a video clip circulated widely showing Al-Nassiri in the stands, appearing to laugh and exchange jokes with his entourage moments after the final whistle. This image, contrasting sharply with the devastation felt by supporters, acted as a catalyst.

Fans quickly mobilized online, launching a massive campaign under the Arabic hashtag “#AlNassiri_Out.” The demand is clear and unified: the immediate resignation of the club president. Social media platforms have been flooded with criticism, accusing Al-Nassiri of mismanagement and a lack of seriousness that is harming the club’s stature.

The discontent is not new but has reached a boiling point. Supporters point to a series of questionable decisions, including the handling of the departure of iconic coach Nuno Espírito Santo in November 2023 and the subsequent managerial changes. The Champions League exit was the final straw.

Protests have moved beyond the digital sphere. During Al-Ittihad’s recent Saudi Pro League match against Al-Tai on March 16, 2024, large sections of the crowd chanted for Al-Nassiri to leave. Banners with the same message were prominently displayed in the stands, signaling a deep and growing rift between the leadership and the fanbase.

As of now, Yusuf Al-Nassiri has not issued any public response to the escalating demands for his departure. The pressure, however, continues to mount with every passing day, creating an unstable environment at one of Saudi Arabia’s most storied clubs.
