Camavinga breaks silence after controversial red card

Eduardo Camavinga has finally addressed the controversial red card that saw him sent off during Real Madrid’s dramatic 2-1 victory over UD Las Palmas on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

The French midfielder was dismissed in the 90+2nd minute of the match after receiving a second yellow card from referee Alejandro Muñiz Ruiz. The initial booking came in the 81st minute for a foul, but it was the second caution for time-wasting as he retrieved the ball for a throw-in that sparked significant debate.

In a brief statement posted on his social media accounts, Camavinga broke his silence. “Very happy with the victory and the work of the team. We continue,” he wrote, choosing to focus on the positive result rather than contest the decision.

The incident occurred with the match poised at 1-1. Camavinga, attempting to quickly take a throw-in to maintain pressure, had the ball taken from his hands by a Las Palmas player. In the ensuing attempt to retrieve it, he was deemed by the referee to have impeded the opponent, resulting in the decisive second yellow.

Despite being reduced to ten men, Real Madrid secured all three points moments later when Aurélien Tchouaméni headed in a 84th-minute winner. The victory was crucial, maintaining pressure on La Liga leaders Girona.

Camavinga’s red card means he will be suspended for Real Madrid’s next league fixture, a home game against Getafe on Thursday, February 1, 2024. The club has not indicated whether it will appeal the suspension.
