Mbappe or Vinicius? Real Madrid's looming sacrifice

Real Madrid’s long-awaited acquisition of Kylian Mbappe has finally materialized, but his arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer presents a significant tactical puzzle for coach Carlo Ancelotti. The central question now dominating discussions in the Spanish capital is not if Mbappe will play, but how his integration will impact the team’s existing superstar, Vinicius Junior.

According to reports from the Spanish newspaper “Marca,” Ancelotti is actively considering a major strategic shift to accommodate both forwards. The most likely solution appears to be moving Vinicius from his preferred left-wing position into a central role as a striker. This plan would see Mbappe occupy the left flank, with Rodrygo Goes on the right, forming a formidable new attacking trio.

This potential change represents a significant sacrifice for Vinicius, who has flourished on the left side. Since the 2021/2022 season, the Brazilian has been the team’s undisputed main threat in that zone, using his pace and dribbling to cut inside and create havoc. Shifting him to the center, a position he has rarely played at the highest level, is a gamble. It asks him to adapt his game, operate in more congested spaces, and alter his movement patterns to serve as the team’s focal point.

The alternative, leaving Mbappe on the bench, is simply not an option given his stature and the club’s massive investment. Therefore, finding a way to harness the power of both players is Ancelotti’s primary challenge for the 2024/2025 campaign. The Italian manager is known for his tactical flexibility, but making this partnership work is perhaps his biggest test yet.

All eyes will be on the team’s pre-season preparations as Ancelotti experiments with this new system. The success of Real Madrid’s season, and their quest for every trophy including the coveted 2025 Champions League, may hinge on whether Vinicius can successfully reinvent himself as a number nine. The looming sacrifice could define the next era at the Bernabeu.
