Erling Haaland delivered a decisive and dramatic blow at the Etihad Stadium, scoring twice as Manchester City defeated Burnley 3-1, a result that confirms the visitors’ relegation to the Championship.
The match began with City asserting their dominance early. The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Julián Álvarez was brought down in the box by goalkeeper Arijanet Muric. Haaland stepped up and coolly converted the penalty, sending Muric the wrong way to give the champions a 1-0 lead.
Burnley, fighting for their Premier League survival, showed resilience and found an equalizer against the run of play. On 47 minutes, a defensive lapse allowed David Datro Fofana to break through and slot a composed finish past Stefan Ortega, making it 1-1 and igniting hopes of a crucial point.
City, however, responded with characteristic force. The pressure told in the 71st minute as Kevin De Bruyne’s whipped cross was met by a powerful header from Josko Gvardiol, restoring City’s lead at 2-1.
The final act belonged to Haaland. In the 91st minute, he sealed the victory and Burnley’s fate. A clever pass from substitute Jérémy Doku found the Norwegian striker in space, and he fired a low, first-time shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.
The result leaves Burnley in 19th place, five points from safety with just one game remaining, mathematically confirming their drop to the second tier. For Manchester City, the three points keep the pressure on league leaders Arsenal in a thrilling title race as they chase an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League crown.
