Moroccan club targets 28-goal star for World Cup push

Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca are plotting a major squad overhaul ahead of the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup, with club president Hicham Ait Menna revealing that the board is working on a “surprise” that could shake up the tournament.

Speaking in a recent interview, Ait Menna confirmed that Wydad are in advanced talks to sign a prolific striker who netted 28 goals last season. The president stopped short of naming the player but hinted that the deal would be a statement of intent for the World Cup campaign.

“We are targeting a name that can make a difference on the global stage,” Ait Menna said. “This is not just about adding numbers to the squad. We want a player who can carry the weight of the club in the toughest competition in the world.”

The 28-goal forward, whose identity remains undisclosed, is believed to be playing in Europe. Sources close to the club suggest that Wydad have already submitted a formal offer and are waiting for the player’s response.

Wydad qualified for the expanded 2026 Club World Cup after winning the CAF Champions League in 2023. The tournament, set to be held in the United States, will feature 32 teams for the first time.

Ait Menna added that the club is also looking to strengthen other positions. “We need depth. The World Cup will demand a lot from every player, and we must be ready physically and mentally,” he said.

The Moroccan giants have been active in the transfer market, but this potential signing would be their most high-profile move yet. Fans have already begun speculating on social media about the identity of the mystery striker.

Wydad are expected to make an official announcement within the next two weeks if negotiations succeed. The club’s management has urged patience, saying they want to avoid a bidding war that could drive up the price.

With the 2026 tournament drawing closer, Wydad are clearly aiming to make a mark. Whether the 28-goal man will be the one to lead their charge remains to be seen, but the ambition is unmistakable.
