The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially settled the ongoing debate regarding the expansion of the African Champions League. The decision, confirmed by the governing body, puts an end to weeks of speculation about increasing the number of participating clubs in Africa’s premier club competition.
According to the official statement released by CAF, the format of the tournament will remain unchanged for the 2025-2026 season. The competition will continue to feature 16 teams in the group stage, dismissing earlier rumors that suggested an expansion to 24 or even 32 clubs.
The debate had intensified in recent months, with several prominent figures within African football calling for a larger field. Proponents argued that expanding the tournament would provide more opportunities for clubs from emerging football nations and increase revenue streams. However, CAF’s final decision prioritizes maintaining the current competitive balance and logistical feasibility.
“After thorough consultations with all stakeholders, including member associations, clubs, and broadcast partners, CAF has decided to keep the current format of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League for the 2025-2026 edition,” the statement read. “The 16-team group stage will remain, ensuring the highest level of competition and quality.”
The decision comes as a relief for many traditional powerhouses who feared that an expanded tournament would dilute the quality of matches. Clubs like Al Ahly, Wydad Casablanca, and Esperance de Tunis have consistently dominated the competition, and a larger field could have altered the dynamics significantly.
CAF also confirmed that the qualifying rounds will follow the same structure as previous years. The preliminary rounds will begin in August 2025, with the group stage draw scheduled for October 2025. The final of the 2025-2026 edition is set to take place in May 2026 at a venue yet to be announced.
While the expansion debate has been settled for now, CAF did not rule out future changes. “We will continue to evaluate the competition’s growth and may consider adjustments for the 2026-2027 season based on feedback and market conditions,” the statement added.
For now, African football fans can expect another thrilling edition of the Champions League with the same format that has produced memorable moments and intense rivalries over the years.
