The Egyptian Football Association sparked debate on social media after posting a New Year message that many fans linked to Liverpool’s recent results.
The EFA shared a photo of Mohamed Salah smiling, alongside the phrase “New Year’s smile”, with congratulations to followers on the arrival of the new year.
Some supporters quickly suggested the post carried a hidden joke aimed at Liverpool, as it came shortly after the Premier League side dropped points in their latest outing.
Others rejected that reading, insisting the association’s message was simply a normal greeting built around Egypt’s biggest football star, without any intention to mock the English club.
What the post revealed, however, was how strongly Salah’s image continues to be tied to Liverpool’s highs and lows, even in messages that are not directly related to the team.
The message remained online as reactions continued, with the conversation split between those who saw harmless celebration and those convinced the timing was deliberate.
