Egypt’s national team booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after edging past Benin in a hard-fought match that was decided in extra time.
The Pharaohs and Benin ended the regular 90 minutes locked in a goalless draw, with both sides cautious and the chances limited as the game moved into added time.
Egypt finally broke the deadlock in extra time, scoring the goal that settled the contest and allowed the seven-time African champions to avoid the upset and continue their campaign.
The win sends Egypt into the last eight of the tournament, where they will wait to learn their next opponent as the knockout rounds continue in Morocco.
