Sporting KC set to hire Rapha Wicky to replace Vermes

Rapha Wicky, in a black coat and glasses, looks thoughtfully ahead, hinting at his upcoming role with Sporting KC.

Sporting Kansas City are set to appoint Rapha Wicky as their next head coach, with the club moving quickly to line up a replacement for Peter Vermes.

The decision follows Vermes’ exit after a long spell in charge that made him one of MLS’ defining sideline figures. Sporting KC are now turning to Wicky as they begin a new era, with the former FC Basel and BSC Young Boys boss expected to take over the role.

Wicky, 48, has also worked in MLS before, having coached Chicago Fire. His background includes experience in Switzerland and Europe, and Sporting believe he fits the profile to lead a squad that needs a reset and a clear identity.

The change ends a remarkable chapter under Vermes, who became synonymous with Sporting’s modern success and stability. His departure signals a major shift for the club, which is looking for a fresh voice after a difficult run of form.

Sporting KC have not yet made an official announcement, but the hire is expected to be confirmed soon as Wicky prepares to step into one of the league’s most closely watched jobs.
