Barcelona requests Griezmann be called in Bartomeu corruption case

Barcelona have formally requested that Antoine Griezmann be summoned to testify in the ongoing corruption case involving former club president Josep Maria Bartomeu, according to sources close to the investigation.

The request was submitted to the court handling the case, which centres on alleged irregularities during Bartomeu’s tenure at the Camp Nou. The club’s legal team believes Griezmann’s testimony could shed light on certain financial operations and transfer dealings that took place during his time at the club.

The French forward, who left Barcelona in 2021 to rejoin Atletico Madrid, is one of several high-profile figures whose involvement is being examined as part of the broader probe into alleged corruption and mismanagement under Bartomeu’s leadership.

The case, which first came to light in 2020, revolves around accusations that Bartomeu and other former board members engaged in a smear campaign against current and former players through social media accounts. The scandal, known as “Barcagate,” has since expanded to include questions over financial transparency and transfer fee payments.

Barcelona’s legal representatives argue that Griezmann’s signing in 2019, which involved a €120 million release clause paid to Atletico Madrid, is a key element of the investigation. They contend that the forward’s direct knowledge of the negotiations and contractual details makes his testimony essential.

The court has yet to rule on the request. If approved, Griezmann would be called to give evidence in the coming weeks. The player has not publicly commented on the matter.

Bartomeu and several former associates have denied any wrongdoing. The case remains ongoing, with further hearings expected later this year.
