Riyad Mahrez has lifted the lid on the heated atmosphere surrounding the Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli Saudi Clasico, revealing the role Cristiano Ronaldo played in the tension between the two sides.
The Algerian winger, who now plays for Al-Ahli, spoke openly about the build-up to the fixture and the intensity that defined the encounter. Mahrez confirmed that Ronaldo’s presence at Al-Nassr has added an extra edge to the rivalry, with the Portuguese superstar’s competitive nature spilling over into the dugout and onto the pitch.
“The atmosphere was very charged,” Mahrez said. “Cristiano is a winner, and he brings that mentality to every game. When you face a team with a player like him, the tension is automatic. He pushes his teammates, and that raises the level of the match for everyone.”
The former Manchester City star did not hold back in describing the confrontational moments that took place during the game. He stated that Ronaldo’s constant demands and vocal presence on the pitch created a sense of urgency that both teams fed off.
“There were moments where things could have boiled over,” Mahrez added. “But that’s football. These are the games you want to play in. The fans, the pressure, the history — it all comes together.”
Mahrez also confirmed that the rivalry between Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli has intensified since Ronaldo’s arrival in 2023. He noted that the Saudi Pro League has grown in competitiveness, and matches between the top sides now carry a weight that was not there before.
“The league is different now,” he said. “Every team is stronger. But when you add a player like Cristiano, it changes everything. The focus, the media attention, the way the opponents prepare — it all shifts.”
The Algerian international did not reveal any specific incidents from the dressing room or tunnel, but he made it clear that the tension was real and that Ronaldo was at the center of it. Mahrez insisted that the rivalry remains respectful, though the competitive fire is undeniable.
“At the end of the day, we are all professionals,” Mahrez concluded. “But when the whistle blows, there are no friends. Cristiano knows that, and so do we.”
