Egypt have added a new chapter to African football history after reaching nine points for the first time in a single edition of the Africa Cup of Nations group stage, following their 2-0 win over Cape Verde.
The result confirmed Egypt’s place among a select group of nations to hit nine points in the group phase, a milestone they had never achieved before.
One of the key figures on the night was Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet”, who continued his strong run by scoring for the second match in a row. His latest strike also carried a personal landmark, as he moved level with Sadio Mane on the list of African players scoring in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Egypt controlled the contest and made sure of the win with two goals, sealing a perfect group-stage record and closing the door on any complications.
The victory not only strengthened Egypt’s tournament momentum, but also underlined their growing confidence as the knockout rounds approach, with Trezeguet’s form offering another boost for the national team.
