Legal expert proposes plan to strip Senegal of AFCON title

Senegal players celebrate their Africa Cup of Nations victory, holding the trophy aloft amid confetti and team camaraderie.

A legal expert has put forward a proposed legal route that could, in his view, lead to Senegal being stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, following what he described as regrettable incidents linked to the final.

The expert argued that the matter can be approached through formal complaints and legal procedures based on the competition’s regulations and the disciplinary framework used by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

He explained that any move of this kind would require gathering documented evidence of the incidents, identifying responsibility, and presenting a structured file to the competent bodies, starting with CAF’s disciplinary channels before any further legal steps are considered.

The plan also includes pushing for an official review of the match report and related documents, while stressing that decisions of such magnitude are not taken through public pressure but through the institutions in charge of enforcing the rules.

Senegal won the AFCON final on penalties after a goalless draw, claiming the first continental title in the country’s history, but the controversy surrounding the aftermath has continued to spark debate.

The expert insisted that the process, if pursued, must follow a clear legal path and respect the established timelines and procedures for appeals and disciplinary action under CAF’s system.
