Former Cameroon midfielder Alexandre Song has revealed that his ex-teammate Rigobert Song was pushed into stepping onto the pitch during the Africa Cup of Nations final because of Morocco supporters.
In comments reported after the tournament, Alexandre said: “It was Morocco fans who made him go down to the pitch in the AFCON final.”
The incident took place during the final in which Cameroon beat Egypt on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the end of extra time, in a match that decided the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title.
Alexandre explained that the crowd’s reaction and pressure from the stands played a major role in what happened, insisting the move was not planned in advance but came in the heat of the moment.
The revelation adds new detail to a moment that drew attention during the game, with Alexandre pointing directly to Morocco fans as the reason behind his teammate’s actions on the touchline that night.
