Monterrey striker German Berterame has been warned that a move to Inter Miami to link up with Lionel Messi “would be a step backwards” as the Liga MX forward edges closer to a reported $15 million transfer.
Inter Miami, the reigning MLS Cup winners, are understood to be pushing to add another high-profile name to Messi’s squad, with Berterame now emerging as a serious target. The Argentina-born forward has been one of Monterrey’s key attacking players and his form has put him on the radar outside Mexico.
The potential switch has sparked debate because of the direction it would take Berterame’s career. Former Mexico international and pundit Carlos Hermosillo questioned whether joining Miami at this stage would be the right football decision, even with the appeal of playing alongside Messi.
“It would be a step backwards,” Hermosillo said, offering a blunt view on the idea of leaving Liga MX for MLS despite the growing pull of Miami’s project and global profile.
Berterame’s name has been linked with a move as talks around a deal gather pace, with the fee described as being in the region of $15m. Inter Miami’s interest comes as the club continues to build around Messi following its MLS Cup success, while Monterrey face the prospect of losing an important part of their attack.
For now, Berterame remains a Monterrey player, but the warnings around a Messi team-up underline how closely his next step is being watched on both sides of the border.
