John Stones has bid an emotional farewell to Manchester City, declaring: “I arrived as a boy and now I leave as a man.”
The England international defender has officially ended his nine-year spell at the Etihad, bringing the curtain down on a trophy-laden chapter that saw him become one of the most decorated English players of his generation.
Stones, 31, joined City from Everton in 2016 for a fee in the region of £47.5 million. At the time, he was a promising but raw centre-back. Under Pep Guardiola, he developed into a key figure in a side that redefined English football.
In his farewell message, Stones reflected on his journey. “I came here as a boy, and now I leave as a man,” he wrote. “I gave everything for this club and this city. The memories will stay with me forever.”
During his time at City, Stones won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the Champions League in 2023 as part of the club’s historic treble. He also played a crucial role in City’s first-ever Club World Cup triumph.
His versatility became a hallmark of Guardiola’s system, often stepping into midfield to create numerical advantages. That tactical evolution made him indispensable during City’s most successful periods.
Stones also paid tribute to the fans. “You have supported me through the highs and the lows. I will always be grateful,” he said. “Manchester City will always be part of who I am.”
The defender’s departure marks the end of an era for a City side that has dominated English football. While the club has not yet confirmed his next destination, reports suggest a move abroad is likely, with several European clubs expressing interest.
Stones leaves as a club legend, having arrived as a promising youngster and departing as a mature, battle-hardened winner. His legacy at the Etihad is secure.
