Harry Maguire praised Michael Carrick for stepping in and “galvanising” Manchester United after their “massive” victory at Arsenal.
United claimed a 3-2 win at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night in the Premier League, in Carrick’s first game in temporary charge following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal.
Arsenal struck first when Emile Smith Rowe finished into an empty net after David de Gea went down in the build-up, but United hit back quickly through Bruno Fernandes. Cristiano Ronaldo then put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot before half-time.
The hosts levelled after the break through Martin Odegaard, only for Ronaldo to strike again to settle a dramatic contest and secure all three points for United in north London.
After the final whistle, Maguire made a point of crediting Carrick for the way he handled a difficult week at Old Trafford and for getting a response from the squad.
“Firstly, I want to thank Michael Carrick,” Maguire said. “He’s been brilliant. He’s galvanised us. He’s worked so hard, the staff have worked so hard.”
United’s win moved them closer to the top four and eased the pressure around the club as they continue the search for a new manager, with Carrick remaining in charge in the interim.
