Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has revealed he battled anxiety and depression for a year and a half, explaining the personal struggle that led him to step away from football for a period.
Speaking openly about his mental health, the Uruguay international said: “I’d been suffering with anxiety for a year and a half.” Araujo explained that the situation became increasingly difficult to manage, and that he went through a dark spell before deciding he needed time and help to feel like himself again.
The centre-back admitted the problem was not something that appeared overnight, but something that built up and affected his day-to-day life. He described the impact it had away from the pitch as well as how hard it was to cope while still trying to perform at the highest level.
Araujo also spoke about the importance of acknowledging the issue rather than hiding it, and said taking a break was a key step in his recovery. He underlined that seeking support made a difference, and that speaking out now is part of moving forward.
The Barcelona defender’s comments shine a light on the pressures players can face behind the scenes, with Araujo making clear that, despite his status in the squad, he is not immune to mental health struggles.
By sharing his experience, Araujo hopes others who are going through something similar will feel encouraged to ask for help and understand they are not alone.
