Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson hails expanded play-offs plan

Phil Parkinson, Wrexham manager, applauds fans with a determined expression, set against Wrexham's flag colours in the background.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has backed plans to expand the Championship play-offs, calling the idea “incredible” as talk grows around changes to the promotion race.

The proposed shake-up would widen the current four-team play-off format, with more clubs given a shot at reaching the Premier League through the end-of-season lottery. It has been revealed that the discussion centres on an expanded structure that would alter how many sides qualify and how the play-off schedule is set.

Parkinson, who has overseen Wrexham’s rapid rise in recent seasons, said the prospect of more teams being involved would add even more drama to an already tense finish to the campaign.

“It’s incredible,” Parkinson said, welcoming the idea and stressing how much the play-offs mean to clubs and supporters when everything is on the line.

The Championship play-offs are currently contested by the teams finishing third to sixth, with the winner earning promotion at Wembley. Any change would represent a major shift in the way the EFL’s top division decides its final promoted club.

Parkinson’s comments come as Wrexham continue to build towards their longer-term ambition of reaching the Championship. The Welsh club’s progress under the manager has kept them firmly in the national spotlight, and he believes fresh ideas that raise the stakes could boost interest even further.

No final decision has been confirmed, but momentum is building around the expanded play-off proposal, with Parkinson among those to publicly endorse it.
