Matt Wells has been named the new head coach of the Colorado Rapids, stepping into his first job as a permanent No.1 after working as an assistant at Tottenham.
Wells arrives in MLS with a clear message about what he wants from his new team, insisting he is not thinking small as he begins his next chapter in Colorado.
“Win everything except the fair play award,” Wells said, setting an ambitious target as he starts work with the Rapids.
The former Tottenham coach is taking charge with the aim of building a competitive edge quickly, and he has spoken about creating a strong mentality within the squad as the Rapids look to move forward.
Wells’ appointment comes as Colorado continue reshaping their football operation, with the club also revealing that United States goalkeeper Zack Steffen and midfielder Paxten Aaronson are part of the Rapids group he will be working with.
For Wells, the challenge is clear: deliver results, raise standards and make the Rapids a team that expects to compete, not one that settles. His first head coaching role now begins with big demands and an even bigger statement of intent.
