Bayern Munich great Lothar Matthaus has compared Michael Olise to club icon Arjen Robben after the winger’s strong start in Munich, while also warning the Bundesliga champions about contract talks involving one of his key partners on the right.
Olise has quickly made an impact since arriving from Crystal Palace and has caught the eye with his left-footed threat and direct style, prompting Matthaus to draw a bold link with former Netherlands star Robben.
In the same assessment, Matthaus also likened Konrad Laimer’s role at right-back to the influence Philipp Lahm used to have for Bayern, pointing to the way the Austrian supports attacks and helps create space for the winger.
Matthaus said the developing understanding between Olise and Laimer has stood out, with the pair combining effectively down Bayern’s right side as the season has progressed.
However, Matthaus also delivered a clear message to the club over Laimer’s situation, urging Bayern to move decisively when it comes to securing important players and avoiding unnecessary uncertainty during negotiations.
Olise’s form has continued to raise expectations, and the Robben comparison underlines the level of impact Bayern believe the France international can have as he settles into life at the Allianz Arena.
