A wave of anger has erupted among Algerian fans on social media after Kylian Mbappé was seen supporting the Morocco national team, while appearing to ignore Algeria.
The controversy began when Mbappé publicly showed his backing for Morocco, a gesture that many Algerian supporters viewed as a slight, especially given the country’s strong football history and its close ties with the French game.
Algerian users accused the France captain of “choosing sides” and questioned why he did not offer the same support to Algeria, pointing to the large Algerian community in France and the frequent links between Algerian football and the French league.
The backlash was amplified online, with many posts criticising Mbappé’s stance and calling his message unfair, while others defended the player and said he was free to show support where he wished.
The debate has continued to grow, with Mbappé’s name trending in Algerian discussions, turning what started as a simple show of support into a wider argument about recognition, identity and respect between fans across North Africa.
