Algerian federation settles Mahrez armband debate after Asia cup

The Algerian Football Federation has officially put an end to the ongoing debate surrounding Riyad Mahrez and the captain’s armband, following the team’s disappointing exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speculation had been rife after Algeria’s early elimination from the tournament in Ivory Coast, with questions raised about the leadership role of the Al-Ahli star. However, the federation has now released a clear statement confirming that Mahrez remains the first-choice captain of the national team.

In an official communiqué, the federation stated that Mahrez will continue to wear the armband, putting an end to any rumors of a change in leadership. The decision comes after what many described as a “earthquake” in Asian football, referring to the surprising results and performances in the ongoing Asian Cup.

The statement emphasized that the federation’s technical staff, led by coach Djamel Belmadi, has full confidence in Mahrez’s ability to lead the squad. It also highlighted that the captaincy is not up for debate and that the team is now fully focused on the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in 2026.

Mahrez, who has been a key figure for Algeria since their 2019 AFCON triumph, faced criticism after the team failed to progress past the group stage in Ivory Coast. Despite the setback, the federation has made it clear that the 33-year-old remains an integral part of their plans moving forward.

The clarification is expected to end the ongoing discussions among fans and pundits, allowing the team to concentrate on their next challenges without any internal distractions.
